Celebrating SA’s youth

Ekta Somera addresses South Africans for Youth Day.

A Youth Capital community mobiliser of Umkomaas, Ekta Somera, strongly believes in empowering and celebrating the youth of South Africa, with Youth Day being observed this Sunday, June 16th.

Youth Capital is an advocacy campaign calling for policy change to solve youth unemployment with the vision of a South Africa where every young person has the skills and opportunity to get their first job.

On behalf of Youth Capital, Somera has the following message:

“The legacy of the 1976 uprising serves as a reminder of the power of youth activism and solidarity in the face of injustice. While the political landscape has evolved since then, the challenges faced by young people in South Africa persist, from educational inequalities to high unemployment rates.

“However, amidst these challenges lies a tremendous opportunity. The youth of South Africa possess an abundance of untapped potential, brimming with fresh perspectives and innovative ideas. Investing in youth empowerment, whether through education, training or entrepreneurship opportunities, not only benefits young individuals, it also makes the country stronger. It means more jobs, better schools and a fairer society where everyone has a chance to succeed.

“Today’s youth become tomorrow’s leaders, and by drawing inspiration from the courage and sacrifices of those who came before them, today’s youth can continue striving for a brighter future, guided by the principles of unity, resilience and social justice.”
