Handle medical equipment with care, says hospice

Medical equipment is re-used for patients and must always be handled with care.

Khanya Hospice staff were in disbelief after medical equipment was dropped off at the organisation in poor condition.

Neil McDonald of hospice stated that they often receive equipment from generous members of the community and that these donated items, such as wheelchairs, hospital beds, walkers and so on, are re-used for other patients.

“We do take great care in keeping them sterilised and clean at all times,” he said.

Some of the donated items received are new.

“We were shocked when our new wheelchair came back with no wheels. We think whoever took it off thought they could fit it on a bicycle – who knows,” said Neil.

Another wheelchair was returned with the seat and armrests in a ‘disgusting’ condition.

“We unfortunately cannot use that for our patients and have to now give it away for recycling.”

The public is asked to please handle medical equipment with care and return it in the same condition it was taken.
