The protest action which started this morning in Marburg on the N2 has spread, with numerous intersections blocked.
Some have reopened, like the intersection near the Oribi Plaza in Port Shepstone.
Information received from various sources is that the protest has to do with Operation Shanela which has been impounding vehicles since the start of this week. It’s allegedly R10 000 to release a vehicle from the pound.
Last month, Police Minister Bheki Cele said 551 506 suspects were arrested for various crimes across the country since May 2023 when Operation Shanela was introduced.
“Over 500 000 suspected criminals have been removed from society and brought before the courts to answer for their alleged crimes,” Cele said.

As far as can be ascertained, the following areas are still closed:
- N2: Main Harding Road at Marburg KFC robots: BLOCKED
- Murchison and Merlewood robots at Mkholombe: BLOCKED
- Ugu robots in Marburg: CLOSED
- P200 at Gamalakhe: CLOSED
- Intersection near Port Shepstone hospital: BLOCKED
- Marine Drive near Engen garage in Olso Beach: BLOCKED
- Marine drive / R102 towards Marburg from Sheppie (Ford/Mazda): BLOCKED
Saps, Law Enforcement and security personnel are on scene.
