Loud music from KwaMasinenge irks residents

A resident in Uvongo, Martine Blackler, said the music is incessant and loud enough to be heard around Uvongo.

Residents of Peter Road in Uvongo are fed up with the loud music emanating from KwaMasinenge every weekend, from Friday afternoon until Sunday.

It is believed that music comes from illegal taverns that are operating there.

A resident in Uvongo, Martine Blackler, said the music is incessant and loud enough to be heard around Uvongo.

“This has been repeatedly reported to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), and the response is always the same – vehicles are unavailable, or they will not go into Masinenge.

“Bylaws state that this type of noise or any disturbance may not be allowed from Sunday to Thursday between 21:30 and 07:00, and on Friday to Saturday, from midnight to 08:00.”

According to Blackler, shacks are also encroaching on tar roads, and illegal and highly dangerous electricity connections are found all over Masinenge.

The spokesperson for RNM, Simon April, said that the Office of the Mayor indicates that it will investigate the allegations levelled against Law Enforcement.

“A preliminary investigation shows that there have been joint operations by law enforcement agencies to attend to the criminal activities such as selling of drugs, illegal shebeens, breaking of by-laws, erection of new shacks, etc.”

He said the issue of illegal electricity connections has been reported to Eskom since the area is in the power utility’s area of supply, and the municipality has no right to disconnect or remove them.

April said the municipality can also indicate that it is incorrect to say that the law is being selectively enforced.

“Accessing the area is not an easy exercise due to it being an informal settlement with no proper zoning for access roads.”
