Road damage complaints fall on deaf ears

The heavy vehicles have damaged the road, and sometimes residents take it on themselves to fix it.

From 2015 to date, residents on Peter Road in Uvongo have been complaining about a property that is being used as a base for an industrial enterprise.

The subsequent activities and the disruption have long been a bone of contention.

The owner has been operating a construction company, Siva Pillay Construction, from the property and also parks and maintains heavy vehicles there.

When the company applied to have Lot 1959 rezoned to legalise their operation, neighbours objected.

The company was contacted for comment, but none was received at the time of going to press.

Paul Nel submitted photographic evidence via WhatsApp to Ray Nkonyeni Municipality in February 2023 that large trucks, massive earth compaction and earth moving equipment were being driven on Peter Road, causing visible damage.

“On speaking to the neighbours, it was brought to my attention that Lot 1959 and the other properties on Peter Road are zoned agricultural and that a court order is in place against activities on Lot 1959.”

He said in June 2023, more damage was caused to the road by trucks coming in and out of this property.

“An official from the municipality came out and did a visual inspection and said he would have to escalate it at the council.”

He said the damage was so severe and dangerous that some residents got together and used over a cubic metre of concrete to fix a part of the road.

Nel said they were told that they are not allowed/permitted to use concrete to repair a sinkhole on the road.

Again this year, in February, Nel said he reported trucks being stripped on Lot 1959.

Spokesperson for the municipality, Simon April, said: “As this matter involves different stakeholders and has also been to court, RNM is opting not to comment for now.”
