Government services brought closer to people

Over 106 people received health-related care, the social development cluster had referrals for 20 people, while Home Affairs assisted over 100 people who registered IDs and birth certificates.

The MEC for Social Development, Nonhlanhla Khoza, brought Operation Sigalelekile to Umzumbe Municipality recently, which brought service delivery to the people.

Communities had easy access to services provided by the Departments of Home Affairs and Health, Saps and Sassa.

“People travel long distances and spend a lot of money to get a pension or to register a birth certificate for a newborn. Bringing these services to them will help make things easier.”

Khoza addressed the critical need for creative solutions to eliminate service delivery bottlenecks, ensuring that no citizen is left behind, particularly in rural and isolated communities.

She also mentioned that Mtwalume has become notorious for the murder of women and children.

“We encourage the spirit of Ubuntu in this area. If every individual can have such spirit, we would have a better community.”

She said a number of girls from the area are receiving life skills training.

“We have found that some social ills such as alcohol abuse lead to some of these murders, so we decided that we should train these girls so that they don’t find themselves in situations where they will not be able to defend themselves.”

She said Umzumbe has unusual challenges that the department needs to tackle, and it will, by all means, try to overcome them.
