Going above and beyond to save a dog

The dog was stuck in a drain in Umgababa.

It’s all in a day’s work for these superheroes. After receiving a phone call about a dog stuck in a drain, Inspector Luke Keyser and Field Officer Delani Mncwenyi from Amanzimtoti SPCA went straight to the scene in Umgababa.

Assessing the situation, they realised they would need help from the Umkomaas Fire Department.

Tracey Girling, the manager of Amanzimtoti SPCA, said that after some 30 minutes, the poor dog was safely rescued from the drain.

“We thank members of the public for bringing these situations to our attention and not turning a blind eye and letting an animal suffer,” she said.

Girling thanked the fire department for always willing to help and her staff for never giving up.

If this is your missing dog, it’s currently at the SPCA.

On a separate note, the Amanzimtoti SPCA invites the community to its Mother’s Day open day at its premises on Saturday, May 11, from 08:30 to 11:45.

In an attempt to raise awareness and much-needed funds for the animals in its care, the shelter hosts open days to showcase the work it does.

Community members are encouraged to donate baked goods or unwanted household items for volunteers to sell. Stalls are also available at R100 each.

The address is 1 Nyati Road, Athlone Park.

For more information, to donate or to book a stall, contact Amanzimtoti SPCA on 031 904 2424.
