Schools enjoy ‘Counting in Africa’ tales

SCH Local News | A retired school teacher recently visited several schools on the South Coast.

Brenda Kerr, who retired from teaching a few years ago, has published a new children’s book, ‘Counting in Africa’.

She recently visited several schools on the South Coast, including Cam’s Daycare, New Beginnings Learning Centre, Little Eden Pre-school, Jack and Jill Primary, Creston Primary and Port Shepstone Junior Primary – where she relayed the story book to groups of children.

Kerr was born in Bulawayo and grew up under the Zimbabwean sun. She now lives with her husband, dogs and cats in the beautiful mist-belt of the KZN Midlands.

She believes strongly in imagination and fantasy and loves to include these in the stories that she writes. She has a strong desire to instil a love of reading in children, and hopes through her books to raise awareness about the need for conservation as her readers develop a love for their African heritage.

Counting in Africa is an African Safari story aimed at pre-school and junior primary children, it is a fun introduction to counting, (1 to 10) and is designed to encourage children to see detail, learn more about the big and little five and above all, to have fun exploring the beautiful African bushveld. The book is beautifully illustrated by Candiss Diamondis.

As an extension for further study the book has links to lots of interesting info on a custom-made, child friendly webpage. It is a great book for teachers and parents who want to extend knowledge, as well as encourage reading and research skills.

The webpage has beautiful, informative videos, photos and fun facts related to the big and little five, as well as links to reputable conservation organisations.

A percentage of sales will be donated to Rhino Revolution in Hoedspruit, a non-profit organisation that rehabilitates and rewilds orphaned rhino calves and rescued pangolins, as well as running a successful education programme for rural children who live alongside the Greater Kruger reserve.
