Marine Drive rehab project on track

The scope of work consists of rehabilitation of a 25km section of road.

So far, work to rehabilitate Marine Drive is about 25% complete, with the mammoth project expected to be complete by the end of January 2026.

The contractor Raubex KZN pointed out that the South Coast is a tourist destination, and the public will benefit from the upgraded roads for many years to come.

Also, local suppliers and contractors are benefiting from the work which inevitably helps to alleviate unemployment.

Overall the scope of work involves rehabilitation of 25km of road.

Take note of the following closures (dates are subject to change):

* March 14 to July 14:
R620 (Main Road 395) between the intersection of Marine Drive (at Sasol Margate) and Wartski Drive (Margate police station) will be closed. The available detour to be used is Wartski Drive, south on to Uplands Road and onto Marine Drive in Margate.

* March 15 to August 15:
The intersection between Shirley Avenue, Ramsgate and Waffle House will be closed. The left lane towards Port Shepstone will be closed and traffic flow will be regulated in the right lane only. Once the left lane is complete, the right lane towards Port Shepstone will be closed and traffic flow will be regulated in the left lane only.

Progress so far:

1. The full width of road is expected to be opened early this week from My Happy Place Coffee Shop up to the Izotsha/Marine Drive robot.

2. The full width section from Buccaneers Beach Bar and Grill to the Uvongo Spar is expected to be opened towards the end of the week.

3. Rehabilitation from Seaslopes Avenue to the Total Garage in Margate. Due to the wide width of the road, this section is being constructed in three phases, of which the first phase was completed in December 2023, and the second phase will be completed towards the end of March.

4. Various other sections of the existing asphalt have been removed and replace to date on the 5km section and progress is estimated at 20%.
