Dogs attack pregnant woman

Although in pain, the pregnant mother is doing well.

A three-month pregnant woman is traumatised after being attacked by two dogs in Wingate Avenue, Uvongo last recently.

Juanita Thomas (38) had a craving for cold-drink and decided to take a walk to the shop. Little did she know that a rabies clinic was taking place on the roadside. Two dogs jumped out of their owner’s bakkie and attacked her.

“I saw the dogs coming towards me and remained calm, but they attacked. I sat down to protect my unborn baby and my face. I was bitten on my legs and back. Within seconds, people at the rabies clinic came to my rescue and the dogs were pulled off me,” she said.

She added that the dogs were taken back to the bakkie and given their vaccines. “The owner apologised and took my cellphone number. I called my husband and he rushed me to the hospital. I could not receive much treatment as I am pregnant and there could be a number of health issues that I needed to take into consideration to protect my baby. But I was assured that all is good.”

Speaking to the Herald last Wednesday, Juanita said she’s still in pain. Her wounds will have to be left open and looking at them reminds her of how lucky she is to be alive, and that no harm was caused to her baby.

She added that the owner of the dogs had given her R200 and will keep in touch with her. She reported the incident to the police.

Police confirmed that they are investigating a case of keeping vicious animals.
