Walk promotes reserve preservation

It was hosted by the Mpenjati Honorary Officers, which saw locals participate in a peaceful stroll from Trafalgar.

A cool and peaceful coastal stretch awaited locals for the Honorary Officers low-tide walk from Trafalgar beach to the Estuary recently.

It was hosted by Mpenjati Honorary Officers of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and as their first walk of the year, it commenced in the spirit of creating environmental awareness among the community, as well as increased interest in outdoor activity.

The walk also touched on regulations relating to coastal reserves so that the community is adequately informed, mostly relating to dogs, drones, dunes and litter. The team plans to host more frequent walks in upcoming months.

Anna Jordan, the chairperson of Mpenjati Honorary Officers Group, explained that these walks aim to enhance the overall experience of the reserves. She also emphasised that three new members have joined the team, some of whom are environmental specialists.

This suggests a strong leap forward for local reserves in 2024 and years ahead. In attendance was Dr David Ehlers-Smith, an honorary officer who has previously worked with the Umtamvuna Reserve, but has since moved to Mpenjati.

Volunteers who are interested in preserving the reserves are welcome to contact the team. The community is also encouraged to visit their Facebook Page – Mpenjati Nature Reserve Honorary Officers – for environmental information and advice, as well as details on upcoming walks.
