Ray Nkonyeni workers say they want the municipality to pay money owed to them.
Workers from the community services department marched to the RNM main office on Monday this week, where they demanded to speak to the municipal manager, Khetha Zulu.

According to the workers, RNM was formed after the amalgamation of Hibiscus Coast Municipality and Ezinqoleni Municipality in 2016.

As a result, RNM was meant to receive a higher grading and an increment in salary should have followed

Sizwe Shezi comments on the address of the municipal manager, Khetha Zulu.

“The problem is that we see these councillors flaunting their back pay, but we haven’t received a cent. We want to know why, we all work for the same municipality.”

Zulu said the municipality is aware that the workers are worried that the grading has changed.

“According to my knowledge there is no agreement that after a grading changes everyone would get an increment. As management and council, Cogta informed us that after two municipalities merged the higher grading will be used.”

Zulu said as Hibiscus Coast was graded four and Izinqoleni was graded two, according to Cogta after RNM was formed, grade four was accepted.

He said decisions on workers or councillors salaries cannot be discussed by one department alone.

“We need to wait for the bargaining council to finish its report, it’s not in our power to make the process quick.”
