New mayor conducts impromptu site visits

The mayor further instructed for all work on these sites to be completed within seven working days.

The newly elected mayor of Umdoni Municipality, Clr Mbali Cele-Luthuli, recently gave the Community Services Department a strict mandate to ensure all verge maintenance and grass cutting services are carried out efficiently and effectively.

Last week, the mayor was accompanied by several municipal officials and conducted impromptu site visits in the area, inspecting grass cutting, tree felling, verge maintenance and cutback work executed by both internal staff and contractors.

This was carried out after the municipality received numerous complaints from the public regarding poor service delivery.

“Community services must live up to its name and ensure receivers of services are satisfied,” said Cele-Luthuli.

“As the leadership we were obliged to conduct these site visits, so that we act from an informed perspective.”

Currently, work is being conducted at sites in Park Rynie split into two, Pennington split into three, Ifafa Glebe, Sezela, Bazely, Ifafa beach, Elysium, Mtwalume, Riverside Park, Gandinaghar, Hazelwood, Asoka Heights, Roseville, Scottburgh and Freeland Park.

The mayor further instructed for all work on these sites to be completed within seven working days.

“We will be conducting another site visit at the end of the given period to inspect if work has been duly executed, and if we find that the standard of work is below par, we will ensure necessary disciplinary action is taken.”

“This council takes accountability seriously, it will not be lenient to substandard work and will unreservedly ensure a strict oversight role on matters of service delivery, as it is councillors that are accountable to communities when service delivery is not achieved.”
