Vet speaks on regenerative land management

Dr Peter Ardington looks forward to more lectures with youth from the South Coast and working with different schools.

Veterinarian and conservation farmer, Dr Peter Ardington was the guest speaker at Bendigo Conservancy Group’s first talk of the new year in Southport last Sunday.

The group manages the Bendigo Reserve, which is bordered by the Mtentweni River and the Ntshambili River, and includes the suburbs of Sea Park, Southport, Anerley, Sunwich Port, Mellville and Pumula.

The group hosts monthly talks with various speakers on topics relating to conservation.
Ardington spoke about regenerative land management and biodiversity, and the factors affecting the environment, grasslands, ecosystems, the soil and how people can regenerate it.

His talk explored examples of environmentally negative outcomes such as human-induced extinctions, deforestation, soil erosion and desertification. He also highlighted strategies that will sustain desirable future environmental outcomes for human survival such as sufficient fresh air, clean water, fertile soil and healthy food.

He gave a historical background on grasslands of 12,000 BCE and how they have changed today, saying that there is a need for a revolution, as there still is hope for a green future.

As a trustee of the Jonny Lowe Memorial Trust, Ardington said he lectures youth on conservation and is looking forward to more lectures on the South Coast, with the help of his colleague Desiree Dickens, a member of the Bendigo Conservation Group and Rotary Port Shepstone’s environmental portfolio.
