Taxi violence: Paramedic threatened, area re-opened

Chaos reigned in Margate earlier as taxi associations clashed.

Three people, including a taxi driver, were injured, after gunshots were fired during a taxi violence incident, near the Hibiscus Mall in Margate earlier today.

These reports are still to be officially confirmed by Saps.

Pedestrians and motorists have been warned to avoid the area.

According to reports, the intersection was a chaotic scene.

The chairperson of the Bambanani Taxi Association, Martin Ngcungama, confirmed the shooting and said the issues were being attended to.

Rudi Prinsloo of Mi7 had a hair-raising experience on the scene. While treating an injured person, he was approached by a large group of men and told to leave the patient.

He said the mob then continued to beat the injured man. Police, Wolf Security and ADT quickly intervened and Prinsloo was able to go back to the patient and carry on treating him.

“We can confirm that at least two people have been injured,” he said.

Prinsloo confirmed that one person was transported by Mi7 to hospital, and a seriously injured patient by Netcare 911.
