Donkey washes up on Tweni beach

It's all in a day's work for the staff at the LSC SPCA.

Staff of the Lower South Coast SPCA got an unexpected call on Tuesday this week.
A large adult donkey had washed up onto Tweni beach (north side), and was sadly confirmed dead.

It’s all in a day’s work for the staff at the LSC SPCA.
The inspectorate team together with the helping hands of the kennel staff drove to Tweni beach and managed to drag the ‘dead weight’ off the beach via a footpath, and load it onto one of their vehicles.

An adult donkey could weigh anything between 100kg to 500kg, depending on their age and breed.
It took a team of seven strong men: Inspector Jacob Maduna, Dumisani Gumede, Sunny Mtshulana, Goodwill Mandla, Derrick Shange, Cosmos Ngcungama and Mike Davis to drag the animal off the beach.

“With the heavy rain we have had, the donkey probably got swept down river,” said Davis, manager of the LSC SPCA.

The carcass will be donated to the Oribi Vulture Viewing Hide.

It’s been a busy few months for the SPCA staff, last Saturday they held a successful vaccination drive for Pumula and surroundings.

The LSC SPCA has many exciting events planned this year, so keep an eye on and support the coast’s non-profit animal welfare organisation.
