Marshal patrols continue despite challenges

Santaco had been pleading with businesses and the municipality to help, especially with funds to pay the marshals.

Marshals are still patrolling in the Port Shepstone CBD despite setbacks.

The regional chairperson of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), Lizwi Maphumulo had said that the marshal service will be stopped this month due to a lack of funds.

Nonetheless, marshals have been patrolling the CBD since last week. According to Maphumulo, their numbers have been reduced.

The service had been initiated more than a year ago, after the CBD and surrounding areas were over-run by vagrants, criminals and drugs.

Santaco had been pleading with businesses and Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM) to help them sustain the project, especially with funds to pay the marshals.

It is believed that Santaco is still waiting for RNM to assist, as they had made a formal request at a council meeting last year.

RNM handed over new uniforms to the marshals during the holidays last month.
The spokesperson for RNM, Simon April said the municipality has assisted where it could which is the uniform that the marshals are wearing.

“We are also calling on other stakeholders like businesses to also lend a hand where they can, as these marshals are doing a good job for our town and the public in general.”
