ANC expels Umzumbe municipal speaker

Sbonelo Maphumulo was released from all his duties as a ward councillor, speaker of the municipality and as an ANC member.

The speaker of Umzumbe Local Municipality, Sbonelo Maphumulo has been expelled by the ANC.
Secretary of the ANC in KZN, Bheki Mtolo made an announcement on Wednesday this week.
“We are publicly informing all ANC members, communities of Umzumbe Local Municipality and communities in ward 11 that Sbonelo Maphumulo has been expelled from the ANC with immediate effect,” said Mtolo.

In August, members of the ANC had complained about some councillors not following the mandate of the party in council meetings.
Mtolo later announced Maphumulo’s suspension, banning him from being active in any ANC political activities.

He has now been released from all his duties as a ward councillor, speaker of the municipality and as an ANC member.

“The Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) had received a report on his alleged conduct which was interpreted as in defiance of ANC decisions, especially in ANC council meetings. ANC structures marched to the provincial office in protest against his conduct. After the PEC’s decision to suspend his membership, he was subjected to a fair disciplinary process,” said Mtolo.

Maphumulo was charged for acting in breach of the membership oath; failing, refusing or neglecting to execute or comply with any ANC policy, standing order; undermining the respect for or impeding the functioning of any structure or committee of the ANC; prejudicing the integrity or repute of the organisation, its personnel or its operational capacity by impeding the activities of the organisation and creating divisions within its ranks or membership.

“The verdict was reached in line with the principle of fairness and equality. He was given the opportunity to defend himself and state his side of the story.”

Mtolo said the ANC will deploy a councillor who will serve the people of Ward 11 while they are preparing for a by-election.
Also, the ANC caucus of Umzumbe will be informed and be allowed to elect a new speaker.
