More than a 1000 people united to support the global call for peace in Palestine and an end to the genocide in Gaza.
Selvan Chetty, convenor of the Palestine Solidarity Alliance in Port Shepstone, said the protest in the town’s CBD last Saturday morning was peaceful and incident free.
Brandishing banners, flags and posters, the large contingent of people consisting of all ages, families and children gathered for the public march.
“As a humanitarian organisation, we call on the Israeli government to stop the bombing and killing of Palestinians and to allow the desperately needed aid to flow through to Gaza so that lives can be saved,” said Chetty.
He said the protest in Port Shepstone was not about religion, but about humanity.
“The genocide in Gaza and the deaths in Israel are too many to pass off as collateral damage,” he said.
Chetty called on religious leaders, in particular members of the clergy, whether Hindu, Muslim or Christian, to engage in in-depth understanding of the conflict and to at all times advocate for peace.
“The protest marches around the globe are not against Jews or the Jewish people. It’s in opposition to the Zionist movement that continues to violate all international laws, as well as UN resolutions, by bombarding a largely unarmed and defenseless nation,” he said.
