Umtamvuna power upgrade to start in 2024

The upgrade will comprise the construction of a medium voltage power line from the Eastern Cape to the Umtamvuna low lift pump station.

The long-awaited power upgrade at Umtamvuna Treatment Works will now be realised after the signing of a ground-breaking memorandum of agreement between the Ugu District Municipality and interested parties in the implementation of this project recently.

“The mayor of Ugu, Skhumbuzo ‘Zero’ Mqadi led a delegation of highly esteemed technocrats to the Eastern Cape to conclude a long-awaited agreement which will in effect serve as an enabler for the power utility Eskom to resume with the implementation of Umtamvuna power upgrade,” said municipal spokesperson France Zama.

He said the upgrade will involve the construction of a medium voltage power line from the Eastern Cape to the Umtamvuna low lift pump station.

This will increase the Umtamvuna pump station’s capacity to generate and supply 30 million litres of potable water which will create a stable supply of water to the southern part of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality areas of Port Edward, Ramsgate, KwaXolo, KwaNzimakwe and Izingolweni.

The implementation of this power upgrade is expected to start in January 2024 which will at least be a four-month project, which is expected to be completed in April.

Zama said the reason for the delay was due to the 18km power line cutting through residential areas.
It is believed that residents wanted a specific service delivery from their local municipality, before they would allow the power line to cut through.
