Scottburgh police investigate two drownings

Both male victims drowned in separate incidents last Sunday.

Scottburgh Saps is investigating two separate cases of drownings that occurred at Park Rynie campsite and Preston beach on Sunday, November 19.

Fishermen saw a body in the water near the campsite at about 06:00 and contacted police.

NSRI assisted with the recovery of the body of a 40 year old man and a post-mortem will be conducted at Park Rynie Medico Legal Mortuary.

Later that same day at about 16:00, police responded to the drowning of a 25 year old man at Preston beach.

“It is alleged that he was swimming in the surf when he got into difficulty,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.

A post-mortem will be also be conducted at Park Rynie Medico Legal Mortuary.

Scottburgh Saps appeals to the public to use demarcated areas for swimming, with lifeguards in attendance.

“Stay away from rough seas and never enter the water when intoxicated,” said Captain Francis.

“Parents and guardians must supervise children at the beach, rivers, dams and pools. Never enter the water when its dark.”
