SPCA needs your support during tough economic times

The good new is the society is currently conducting interviews for a new vet to hopefully start in the new year.

The LSC SPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) needs all the support it can get from the community to keep it afloat during tough economic times.

The small, dedicated team tries its best to assist animals in distress within their 800km² jurisdiction which stretches from Hibberdene to Bizana, and inland to Harding.

In the last two years, many SPCAs across the country have shut their doors. Most recently, the Kokstad SPCA sadly closed its doors.

On the back of this, Susan Henderson, the SPCA committee’s vice chairman, said the community should support the SPCA in whatever way possible.

Henderson said people don’t realise the extent or what role the society plays.

“The bigger picture is that we would be in serious trouble without our local SPCA and their wonderful staff who always go the extra mile to help all animals. This society does more than just catch stray dogs. They have the gruelling task of collecting dead animals or euthanising the injured horses on the roadside hit by cars, checking on abattoirs, sales yards, hawking sites for example,” she said.

Mike Davis, manager of the SPCA, said it must be pointed out that they have a veterinarian that visits the SPCA weekly for soft tissue procedures, sterilizations and vaccinations.

The good new is the society is currently conducting interviews for a new vet to hopefully start in the new year.

Davis said they together with the state vet recently held a vaccination and outreach drive in Gamalahke where 669 dogs and cats were vaccinated.

“We are here for the community and we thank the businesses and individuals who continuously support us. Every little contribution helps the animals at the end of the day,” he said.

Help is always needed with petrol, food, blankets and toys for cats and dogs. Volunteers to walk the dogs or spend time with the cats is welcomed.

Look out for this year’s SPCA Christmas wrapping station at the Checkers entrance at the Southcoast Mall from December 9 to 24.
