Community helps pave access road

The school believes that improved access to the school and church will have a profound and positive impact on the local community.

The mid-South Coast community has been part of a transformative journey of literally paving a way to a brighter future for local residents and learners.

Umdoni Christian Academy (UCA) located in Park Rynie, has been a beacon of education and community for several years. However, the state of its access road, Slaley Road, has been a growing concern for the past three years. Despite facing numerous challenges, they have persisted in using this road and making essential repairs when needed.

With an increase in the school’s student population and the impact of heavy seasonal rains, Slaley Road had deteriorated further, demanding urgent attention.

“We approached the municipality for support, but our pleas to undertake the necessary upgrades and repairs to the road went unanswered,” explained UCA principal, Jenny Page.

“Consequently, the School Governing Body made the difficult decision that UCA should take responsibility for implementing a long-term solution.”

In response to this, the school embarked on a fundraising campaign aimed at the community, Park Rynie residents, local businesses, and corporations.

“It is with immense gratitude that we acknowledge the substantial support received from various organisations and individuals, including UCA parents and members of His Church South Coast. Their generous contributions have set us on the path towards a brighter future.”

The school also extends its sincere appreciation to P&G Construction for their significant contribution. P&G Construction took on the task of paving a 400-metre section of road from the R612 to the campus, providing a smoother access route for parents and visitors.

“Their commitment to working alongside our daily activities while constructing the road is acknowledged.”

Last week, UCA staff and members from P&G Construction officially opened the new road.
While the school has made substantial progress in its fundraising efforts, it is still on a journey to fully pay for the road’s construction.

“We appeal to any businesses willing to contribute to consider making a donation to our school.”

UCA holds Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) status, enabling it to issue section 18A certificates, ensuring that all donations are tax-deductible. As a token of our appreciation, we have erected signboards symbolising the contributions of our generous supporters.
The school believes that improved access to the school and church will have a positive impact on the local community.

This project has also greatly benefitted the residents of Slaley Road. Many were unable to access their own driveways because of the severely damaged road.

“The ‘Pave the Way to UCA’ project is a testament to our commitment, as well as the support we have received from various stakeholders. We hope this project will continue to serve as an inspiration to us all, reminding us that, together, we can overcome challenges and create positive change,” added Page.
