Unemployed man cleans fishing spot every day

Nothing stops him from choosing to keep the beach in pristine condition.

Life for some can be difficult and it’s in challenging times that a focused mind is required. This can be made even more extreme with the stress of not being able to find a stable job.

That’s the view of Mfanfikile Mpisane, a 29-year old from Bhobhoyi, who has made it his mission to voluntarily clean up the popular fishing spot known as The Block, near the lighthouse in Port Shepstone.

“I want this area to look good and clean,” he said. Generally, he spends most of the day at The Block, where he can be seen picking up litter and debris.

This usually includes anything from fishing line, hooks, bottles and packets to washed up debris.
He has no cleaning equipment, but this does not deter him from getting up bright and early to ensure the area is spotlessly clean and safe.

When asked why he does this Mfanfikile explained that it’s his calling from the Lord.

“When I started coming to this area I noticed no care was being taken and litter was thrown everywhere. This is a beautiful place and it was an embarrassment to see it so untidy. I wanted it to look clean for everyone. I love the sea; its water is very powerful, like its Creator,” he said.

His story has moved many who visit the fishing spot.

Mfanfikile is well spoken and has much respect for all those he comes into contact with.

He completed Grade 8, but was unable to continue as life took what he describes as a ‘different turn for him’.
Many have been left intrigued watching Mfanfikile hard at work. He hasn’t been asked to do this. He cleans the beaches every day with no tools, and for no reason other than he wants to ‘make the place look nice’.

Mfanfikile asks for nothing and, when offered, he accepts with a humble, grateful heart.
