Soup kitchens dish up 40 000 hot meals

The community is urged to support with donations of non-perishable bulk food items, a cooked meal or R5 towards a meal.

Non-profit, Ignite Revolution‘s Port Shepstone and Nyandezulu soup kitchens which were initiated during the Covid-19 lockdown celebrated their third anniversary recently.

In 2020, the Naicker family founded the soup kitchens to provide much-needed hot meals to the homeless and children from the Nyandezulu community. When they first started, they served meals to 50 children and now provide over 400 meals on some days.

Jessica Naicker of Ignite said Nicey Ngcobo, also a founding member of the organisation has been part of the initiative since it began and heads the soup kitchen in Nyandezulu.

“I run the Port Shepstone kitchen, where I cook and distribute meals. We have since provided access to 40 000 hot, cooked meals which are separate from the food aid to families in need, “said Naicker.

She said in the last three years they have faced some challenges, mainly securing regular sponsors. “We are hoping to get sponsors who would contribute monthly, even if it’s R100 a month or those who will assist with bulk food items. This would assist in meeting the needs, “Naicker added.

She said their short-term goals include securing equipment and utensils and also resources as the project is dependent on donations.

“We urge the community to support us by donating non-perishable bulk food items, a cooked meal or R5 towards a meal.”

Naicker said that the Port Shepstone soup kitchen is only operational, dependant on available resources. “If we have food available, we cook and distribute. We also distribute to other organisations and shelters as well as communities in need.

“The Nyandezulu soup kitchen operates every Friday and has 15 volunteers mostly youth from the area. We need more volunteers at the Port Shepstone soup kitchen, anyone who can assist on weekdays, “she added
