Educator earns Master’s in teacher development

The educator is a good multi-tasker who is achieving great things.

Hard work and resilience has paid off for educator, Philani Gcaba of Murchison who recently attained a Master’s Degree in Teacher Development studies from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), Edgewood.

His study focused on ‘Mentoring Novice Teachers: Lived experiences of HODs’.
Gcaba is not only an educator, but the head of department for Languages, Literacy and Communication at Ingwemabala Technical High School in Betania Mission.

He has also obtained an N6 in public management (Enyenyezi Tech), Bachelor of Arts in Education (Unitra) and Honours in Bachelor of Education (UKZN).
The educator has not had everything on a silver platter.

“My achievements were through focus, dedication and forgetting about distractions, and only concentrating on the present,” he said.

He plans to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy and the topic is: ‘Teacher-learners’ stories of time travel and the cultivation of integrated learning experiences’.

Gcaba is also a multi-tasker, as he is the school’s coordinator for collaboration between Ingwemabala and Slottsskolan in Borgholm, Sweden.

Gcaba visited Sweden in 2013 and 2022 for this collaboration project.
Slottskolan will visit Ingwemabala on October 16.

This is an educational trip focusing on school collaboration, time travel, xenophobia, sustainable development, heritage and culture, learning and teaching methods and ubuntu.
Gcaba also works for the community radio station, Radio Sunny South where he discusses educational topics and invites top educational officials to his show, every Saturday from 06:00 to 10:00.

“I thank God Almighty, colleagues, my family, Snegugu, Akwande, Kwandile, Konke, Trish, and Lin-Lin. I finally thank Tea, and everyone who congratulated me on my achievement,” he said.
