Lemon, lime, lilac and an unfaltering belief

Guest speaker Ria Hackland recalled her time spent at the Johannesburg Art School.

Floaty fabrics and flirty florals are this summer’s hot fashion trend. And the colours to flaunt for the new season are lemon, lime, lilac and monochromes, which never date.

Style gurus Aideen Deendayal and Yvonne Govender, from Milady’s at the Southcoast Mall, presented the clothing chain’s stunning summer range at Stonecroft‘s August meeting.

Models Elvira Venter, Heather Greyling and Yvonne Booysen showed off the clothes and Aideen offered stylish advice on how to take an outfit from casual to chic with a simple shoe change and accessories.

“We sat in a circle, played our guitars and sang protest songs about Vietnam, even though we were not quite sure where it was,” said speaker, Ria Hackland, recalling her time spent at the Johannesburg Art School.

Her talk about her journey through life was a testament to her unfaltering belief in God. She first heard Bible stories at Sunday school at a young age.
Her dad would sit in the car reading the newspapers while she was in church. Sadly, her father died when she was still a child but her widowed mother, who worked as a secretary, managed to send Ria to art school.

Monochrome never dates – Heather Greyling shows off an easy to wear black and white top.

There she was surrounded by ballerinas, artists, actors, singers and musicians.

“Some were talented and some were not, but they all had self-belief. But life can break that belief and leave us older but not wiser,” she said.

She also shared snippets from her adult life – marriage, children, careers, relocating, divorce, financial highs and lows and remarrying.

“When I married Rod he got a wife, two teenagers, a fluffy dog and a shared belief – God’s love. We know that no matter what life throws at us we no longer walk alone.”

Ria picked up her guitar, not for protest songs, but for the poignant Mary Hopkin classic hit ‘Those Were the Days’.

The heartfelt lyrics capture the essence of reminiscing about a bygone era. And her rendition of Josh Groban’s ‘You Raise Me Up’ was a beautiful reminder of strength through faith.
