Woman of substance accolade for educator

She is ecstatic that a deaf person is being recognised in a hearing world.

Kubashnee Perumal won the disability category at the recent Lotus FM Women of Substance Awards.
This event celebrates and honours exceptional women who have made profound contributions to society, highlighting their remarkable achievements and inspiring stories.

“Winning is amazing! I am still still pinching myself to make sure this isn’t a dream,” she said.

Kubashnee is an educator at St Martin de Porres School for the deaf in Port Shepstone for the past 21 years.
She says this award has come at a time after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed a declaration recognising sign language as the 12th official language in SA which means a great deal to her and all deaf people.
Kubashnee said she feels happy and excited that a deaf person is being recognised in a hearing world.

“I’m happy that deaf people and sign language in particular are being given a platform to be heard. I am happy that just coming out of Women’s Month, a deaf person has been chosen for an accolade of being a woman of substance.”

She says this is life-changing as she will now receive many invites to address different gatherings and be able to spread the message that deaf people can do, can achieve and are noticed as an integral part of the hearing world.

“I am happy to have a platform to spread the meaningfulness of sign language and its place in society,” she said.
Kubashnee has also been recently acknowledged in ‘The Unsung Heroes of KwaZulu-Natal’, a book which pays tribute to over 40 people who have made an invaluable contribution to society.
