Cllr Sibongile Khathi, the mayor of Umdoni Municipality, has just announced her resignation.
She will serve notice till the end of September and thereafter venture on a new career path, serving communities as the new Director for Protection of Human Rights in the Office of the Premier.
Mayor Khathi’s resignation as both the mayor and PR councillor was officially tabled at the sitting of the Umdoni council meeting last Wednesday.
Khathi, who mentioned that she has been an activist since the age of about 19, was first entrusted with the duty of serving as mayor in 2020 after the resignation of the previous mayor.
“Subsequent to the Local Government Elections, she was inaugurated in November 2021 as the mayor for the term of office from 2021 to 2026 currently in progress,” said Sphelele Cele, Umdoni spokesperson.
At a media briefing last week, speaker Cllr Mbali Cele-Luthuli commended Khathi’s leadership.
“Mayor Khathi has much to be proud of that has been achieved by this municipality under her leadership. On behalf of the Umdoni Council and senior management I wish her success in her future endeavours. And may she continue to advocate for the creation of a better life for the communities we serve.”
Khathi also expressed her pleasure in having served the Umdoni community and highlighted several achievements under her leadership.
This included: two unqualified audit opinions, implementation of Operation Sigijima Nentuthuko which entailed a wall to wall rehabilitation of the road network, creation of over 400 jobs and construction of approximately 500 houses and small town rehabilitation projects.
“I served the people of Umdoni guided by the mandate of the municipal vision and mission and I hope my efforts were indeed impactful,” said mayor Khathi.
“I thank all councillors, especially those from my organisation and the management for their support in making sure we duly deliver services for the benefit of the Umdoni communities.”
Umdoni Municipality wishes mayor Khathi well as she leaves on her new journey soon.
