Sylvia to walk pilgrim path in Portugal

At the wonderful age of 62, she is truly an inspiration.

Mbango resident Sylvia Bruins (62) is embarking on the Portuguese Camino de Santiago in Lisbon.
She recently arrived in Amsterdam and will then head to Lisbon, where she has chosen the coastal route which entails the charming seaside towns and villages in Northern Portugal.

The Camino Portugues, as its name suggests, is the pilgrim path that runs through Portugal from south to north, from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela.

Sylvia plans to walk for some 15 days to complete the scenic coastal route.
She and her husband, moved from Gauteng to Mbango Retirement Village last October, and very quickly walking became her go-to addiction.

“The South Coast has the most wonderful environment to walk around,” she said.
On her journey, an active Sylvia lost 20kg and fell deeply in love with the KZN South Coast.

Almost everyday Sylvia does her very own ‘South Coast Camino’ by walking along the coastline, clocking an average of 20km a day.

On her walking adventures she pops in at various coffee shops, take-aways, street vendors, bakery outlets or charity shops along the way.

Sylvia knows where all the good places are on the coast to buy the best samoosas, rotis, bunny chows, toffee apples, donuts, coffee or milkshakes in town.

“South Coast people (including the car guards and fishermen) are friendly and the beaches are generally clean. It truly is an amazing place and many don’t realise what it has to offer,” she said.

She is a huge fan of the coast’s Tidy Towns movement and during her walking adventures she can see the wonderful change the group is making to the coast.

At the wonderful age of 62, Sylvia is truly an inspiration.
Her motto is that one is never too old to do something new, and if ‘you don’t try – you will never know!’
