Wheelchair project empowers people

Sue Martin has made it her mission to assist locals through this life-changing project.

“Collecting bread tags and bottle tops doesn’t only help save animals, our environment and recycling companies, but it honestly changes lives.”

These are the words of Sue Martin, a Scottburgh local who volunteers for the Breadtags for Wheelchairs project.

“It changes the lives of not just one person either, but of the family and friends who support a disabled person too.”

Sue has made it her mission to assist locals through this life-changing project.

Angels Care in Sezela, which cares and caters for the elderly, disabled, abused and homeless members of society in need, recently got hold of Breadtags for Wheelchairs and Sweethearts Foundation and requested help for Jamie Cook.

He has neurodegenerative movement disorder which affects his coordination, speech and peripheral nerves. Jamie needs a wheelchair to get around and Breadtags for Wheelchairs and Sweethearts Foundation were willing to help.

Both these non-profit organisations collect bread tags and bottle tops and together with Sue Martin, a wheelchair was made available on very short notice.

Last week, Sue handed over the wheelchair to the very appreciative family. Jamie and Angels Care in Sezela said that they are incredibly grateful for this donation and support. The project also reinforces the power of people working together.

Did you know: It takes 350kg tags or 500kg bottle tops to bring in enough money to buy one basic wheelchair which is around R3000.

And in terms of the tops, there are many that are accepted. This includes plastic cold drink bottle tops, long-life and fresh milk bottle tops, fabric softner bottle tops, plastic bottle water tops and even cooking oil tops.
The tops that do not meet the requirement are typically tops lined with cardboard or the very flimsy ones.
