Fire guts family’s home

The cause of the fire is not known as yet.

A family of four from KwaNositha in Kalmanzi area in Ward 27 is in need of assistance after their home was gutted by fire last Wednesday.
Bhazi Ngcungama, a mother of two said she lost everything and is currently living with relatives.

“I was not at home at the time. My daughter had gone to fetch water from a community tap and on her way back she noticed smoke and flames in our home. She had locked the door and my son was playing in the neighbourhood.

“She asked the neighbours to help her put out the blaze and knock down the door. We don’t know how the fire started, however we suspect that it was an electrical fault,” she added.

Some of the items burnt in the fire.

Ngungama said she tried getting help from her Ward 27 councillor, however he said he was busy and would call her back, and to date, there has been no correspondence from him.

“I then contacted the DA chairperson in my ward, Sizwe Mavundla who came to see the damage and promised that he would try and get help,”Ngcungama added.

DA Women’s Network’s (DAWN), Lesley Matthews visited Ngcungama to hand over some items.
Matthews said she could not believe her eyes when she got to the relative’s house where Ngcungama is currently living.

“Both the relatives and Ngcungama have absolutely nothing. The home is empty. I was able to donate some clothes, bedding and kitchen utensils. The family is still in desperate need of a bed, clothes, food and a school uniform. I am appealing to the community for any help possible,” said Matthews.

To donate contact Lesley Matthews on 082 7445500.
