Teen dies in Scottburgh house fire

An appeal has been made for donations for the family as there is no funeral policy and the house and all their belongings were destroyed.

Tragedy struck when an uncontrollable fire destroyed a Scottburgh family’s house in Erskine Street last Sunday evening, and claimed the life of their teen daughter.

Residents nearby sent out requests for help on numerous local WhatsApp groups from around 18:00 that night.

“Community members, security personnel and medical responders rushed to the scene,” said Hennie Potgieter from Umdoni Community Justice.

It is believed that two children were in the house when the fire started and that their parents were working at the time. They rushed over to the house once they were alerted to the incident.

The little boy (7) was rescued and rushed to hospital.

“The flames then made it impossible for anyone to enter the house as everyone stood in agony watching the house being destroyed by the fire,” added Potgieter.

“Fire brigade and emergency personnel managed to eventually douse the flames, but unfortunately the entire house was already destroyed.”

Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis confirmed that the Saps is investigating the death of the teen. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

The Scottburgh community is devastated by this recent incident and is trying to help the family get back on their feet after their tremendous loss.

An appeal has been made for donations for the family as there is no funeral policy and the house and all their belongings were destroyed. Gents clothes in size 3XL, gents shoes size 12/13, ladies clothes size 38 and 40, ladies shoes size 6/7, boys clothes size 7 to 8 and boys shoes size 1 are needed. The little boy is still in hospital but will need clothing once he is discharged.

There have already been quite a few clothing and toiletries donations made and it has been dropped off at Ediston Inn, Scottburgh. Sources indicate that the family has received these donations so far and are very thankful.
