Party protests over councillors’ conduct

Nine ANC councillors in Umzumbe Municipality have voted with opposition parties.

Branch members of the ANC in Umzumbe gathered at the ANC offices in Durban on Monday this week because they believe some councillors are not following the party’s mandate.

According to branch member, Snqobile Mkhize of Ward 5 under Umzumbe Municipality, the group went to speak to the ANC provincial secretary, Bheki Mtolo about the ANC councillors in their municipality.

Mkhize claimed some of the ANC councillors have been doing as they please and not following the mandate of the party.

“As branch members, we want the province to discipline these councillors because they do not do as they are told by the ANC.” According to a source, during a recent council meeting some councillors raised a point that the acting municipal manager, Mthoko Shangase should be suspended after he allegedly awarded a tender without following the correct procedures.

It’s believed that 12 ANC councillors left the meeting, including the mayor, Bongani Nyuswa but nine remained behind and voted with opposition parties to suspend the municipal manager.

“It seems as if the ANC is defending corruption in the municipality,” added Mkhize. It is believed that the council also raised a vote of no confidence against Nyuswa. ANC provincial spokesperson, Mafika Mndebele said that the secretary of the party, Bheki Mtolo will meet with the relevant structures in Umzumbe today (Thursday).
“We can only comment and come up with solutions after we have listened to their problems.”

When asked about the council raising a vote of no confidence against the Nyuswa, he said he will comment after Mtolo has met with the structures.
