Female dog, pups dumped in nature reserve

Both the mother and puppies were in severe distress.

A female dog was recently discovered tied-up, placed in a bag and dumped at Mpenjati Nature Reserve.
She was unable to move, or feed her puppies which were placed next to her.

The SPCA inspectorate team received a phone call from Mpenjati Nature Reserve for urgent assistance last Saturday.

After receiving a phone call, trainee inspector Dumisani Gumede and trainee field officer Zamo Ndaba of the Lower South Coast (LSC) SPCA immediately attended to the case.
SPCA manager Mike Davis said that on arrival, they came upon a despicable act of cruelty, a female dog was found bound and tied in a bag with her puppies placed next to her.

“Both the mother and puppies were in severe distress,” he added.
Gumede and Ndaba gently cut her free, and she and her puppies were taken to the SPCA.
Davis says mom and puppies are doing well, and although the mother is understandably untrusting of humans, they believe that with care and constant love, she will flourish.

The SPCA had a similar case not too long ago, where sadly a female dog was found dead after being bound with wire and thrown into a river.

“We cannot stress enough to the community that if you cannot look after or care for any animal, to realise there are other choices than inhumanely handling an animal, and to please contact the SPCA immediately for assistance. The SPCA will not turn away any stray or unwanted animal,” said Davis.
He said they would like to thank the community and businesses for the ongoing support. “Without the community’s assistance, we would not be able to do the work that we do.”
