There are well-developed hiking trails to wander in search of Gurney’s sugarbird, malachite sunbird, pale-crowned cisticola, common cuckoo or rufous-winged cisticola.

The three trails found in this reserve include the Kingfisher Trail (30 minutes), the Loerie Trail (2 hours) and the Fish Eagle Trail (4-hour circular route) which give hikers the chance to view an array of birdlife and resident wildlife.

With its famed views of the deep Umtamvuna River gorge, beautiful indigenous trees and spectacular flower displays just after the spring rains, Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is another great picnic spot.
