So much has been done by volunteers from Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate to uplift the town.
Stephen Herbst of Tidy Town said the focus is and has been, to improve the cleanliness and the safety of the town.

“Clean makes clean, and we can’t lose if everyone is involved.”

The long list of successes the Tidy Towns team, working alongside Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, Ugu District Municipality, Margate Saps and civil organisations, has got under their belt so far, is awe-inspiring. One only has to take a walk around the town to notice the transformation.

Herbst said the Tidy Towns team has wonderful plans where this prize money could be used to further help improve Margate which in turn would enhance business development in the region.

Businessman Robin Petterson said that as a fourth generation South Coaster and someone who has the freedom to live wherever his wife and he chooses to, he has never contemplated anywhere else but the house his great-grandfather built in Ramsgate in 1929, and in which his great grandparents and grandparents died.

“Margate is the jewel in our crown, our Eiffel Tower and the holiday mecca which gave birth to all the holiday towns along our magnificent coastal strip. We are the best kept secret in South Africa,” he said.

Newly elected chairperson of Margate Crime Prevention Forum, Jan van Niekerk said the town has been sadly neglected and they are working hard to fix it.

“In the last six months we have installed five cameras with three currently going up. Businessman Stuart Lamont has pledged a further 18 to be placed in and around town. We have an incredible team of reservists who are making arrests and stamping out petty crime,” he said.

Ward 12 councillor Alan Bosch said they are in awe of the efforts of the Tidy Towns teams who have made such a difference to the Margate beach area and surrounds over the past year. “Residents and visitors alike are now able to enjoy a rejuvenated Margate. Let us all support this Tidy Towns initiative for the benefit of Margate,” he said.
