Teenage girl dies after vehicle bursts into flames in Gamalakhe

Glen Preston (Med-Evac) said the rescue efforts helped save the father and one of his daughters.

A 15 year-old girl died after a vehicle caught fire in an accident on the P200, opposite the Ugu Sports and Leisure Centre, yesterday afternoon.

A father and two daughters were pulled out of the burning vehicle by members of Gamalakhe Saps with the help of a Good Samaritan.

Glen Preston of Med-Evac Ambulance Services one of the daughters, aged about 12, sustained serious injuries while the older sibling, aged about 15, died.

Preston said Med-Evac transported the father to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance transported the surviving daughter, with Tanya Grobler from Netcare 911 on board to stabilise her.

Preston said off-duty and on-duty Saps members from Gamalakhe drove to the scene and dragged the people out as the car was starting to burn.

He explained that at as the car was becoming fully alight the fuel tank and tyres exploded.

“The victims were moved further away as that happened, with medics, Saps and others being exposed to significant heat,” he said.

Ray Nkonyeni Municipality fire department members arrived a short while later and put out the fire.

A full police report is awaited.
