Locals employed for verge maintenance services

Their contracts will end in September.

Umdoni Municipality has employed 31 local people under the Expended Public Works Programme (EPWP) with a rationale to improve the provision of verge maintenance services.

The newly appointed personnel have signed a five-month service agreement contract with the municipality ending in September.

This is being done as part of the municipality’s effort to achieve its vision of transforming Umdoni into a Jewel of the South Coast by the year 2030.

The municipal manager, Thabisile Ndlela, said that the municipality heeds the community’s concerns hence a resolution was taken to beef up human resources for amplified provision of verge maintenance services which include among others: cutting and raking of grass, levelling of verges, trimming of trees that are overhanging on roads where necessary and cutting of shrubs on the verges.

The new employees have been trained on how to operate machinery.

“We are confident that the additional capacity will vastly improve these services and ensure our areas are in a presentable state,” said Ndlela.

She further added that the municipality does acknowledge that it has experienced numerous challenges in this area of services hence the strengthening of resources for maximum output.
