Water shortage as boreholes dry up

Ugu says they have allocated funds to resolve water issues.

Although millions of rands have been spent on boreholes to resolve water-related problems in rural areas, getting water still remains an issue in some areas.

Jika Mthethwa, councillor for Ward 17 under Umzumbe Local Municipality said people are still suffering, at a council meeting of Ugu District Municipality last Thursday.

Last year R4 million was spent and two boreholes which were handed over to the community in October.
Mthethwa said in his ward there are eight old boreholes that need to be assessed by Ugu. “These boreholes are old, they were built over two decades ago but I am sure something can still be done so that people can get water.”

He also mentioned that some of the new boreholes are now dry.
Mthethwa said in Sihlonyanyeni in Mthwalume, people have not had water for over a month.

“People here are not even getting water tankers to help them.”
Acting mayor for Ugu, Mandla Chiya responded to Mthethwa during council saying that all boreholes are working.
About a month ago Chiya said the municipality has an allocation of R20 million to deal with water issues, as a long term solution.

He said the municipality has started installation of 20 boreholes which will operate via a solar power system.
He said overall 55 boreholes will be installed in the district.
