New vehicles for Ugu

The vehicles are the replacement for the ones set alight at the Ugu Fresh Produce Market by protesters during the July 2021 unrest.

Ugu District Municipality has spent R14 million on a fleet of new vehicles, including two water trucks.

Acting mayor, Mandla Chiya received the vehicles at the Ugu Disaster Centre recently.

The mayor said that the trucks were funded by Cogta at a cost of R4 million and the municipality spent R10 million on the other vehicles.

He said they have also purchased two honeysuckers, to add to the fleet.
Chiya said the purchase was made, so that they can be able to deliver service to the people.

“During the July 2021 unrest many of our vehicles were burnt, the new vehicles are the replacement, to continue service delivery to our communities.”

At the time, 39 vehicles were set alight by angry protesters at the Ugu Fresh Produce Market.
When the mayor was asked if the municipality will be reducing the number of contractors delivering water to communities, he said they have made attempts to do so.

“We have tried by all means to have our own trucks, although there were some challenges, but Ugu council took a decision to have their own trucks, so that we can save money and use it elsewhere.”
Chiya said that in their new financial year, they want to use the money on new infrastructure.
