Trio ready to rock St Mike’s surf champs

The trio only started their band in October last year, and have already played a few gigs on the South Coast and in Durban.

New band on the block – Element 3 – is set to play at the Tidy Towns South African Surfing Championships at St Mike’s Beach on Monday, May 15.

Both vocalists, Shaun van Niekerk (on bass) and Edwin Müller (on guitar) are from Margate while, Damian Pontuti (on drums) is from Marina Beach.

The trio only started their band in October last year, and have already played a few gigs on the South Coast and in Durban.

Influenced by punk, rock and pop, this band is having so much fun that they are even recording music. Their latest single debut is ‘Laaitie’.

Element 3, all started with Edwin. He’s been making music for years now and loves to rock, it doesn’t matter if it’s in Afrikaans or English, as long as it sounds good, he’s happy, but he didn’t want to do it alone.

So he started looking around town for some local musicians. He then, came across Damian (from the well-known band Braxton Hix), a talented local drummer.

Edwin invited Damian over to discuss some tunes and they jammed a bit. Damian wanted to run for the hills, but when Edwin found out that he had studied drums at the Campus of Performing Arts in Durban, he tied him to a drum throne and made him swear allegiance to the band.

Drums, guitar and vocals are cool, but can get a bit squeaky without the mighty bass. This is where Shaun comes in.
Shaun is also known as a solo musician, Shaun Wulf. He will be playing at St Mike’s on Tuesday, May 16.
