Hitchhikers warned not take lifts from strangers

Women hitchhiking and accepting lifts from strangers are susceptible to robbery, and more seriously rape or murder, police warn.

The public is warned not to accept offers of payment from strangers who need a lift, and to refrain from picking up hitchhikers.

The potential danger of becoming a victim of crime is high if strangers are in your vehicle.

A 43-year-old man was a victim of a carjacking on May 2 after two unknown men approached him in the Port Shepstone CBD requesting a lift to Gamalakhe for which they were prepared to pay for.

Police spokesman Sergeant Sibu Ncane explained that on the way one of the men produced a firearm and robbed him of his cellphone and his vehicle.

He was left stranded on the road and sought help at the nearest police station. Police are investigating a case of carjacking.

Women hitchhiking and accepting lifts from strangers are susceptible to robbery, and more seriously rape or murder.  Be crime-conscious and aware of your safety at all times. Do not take risks with your safety,” said Ncane.

He also urged motorists to drive with their doors locked and to be careful at intersections when driving with open windows.
