Operation Sukuma Sakhe delegation visits hospital

The visit to the Thuthuzela Care Centre by the MEC is indeed a statement to their commitment to improving the lives of the citizens of Ugu District through the initiatives such as Operation Sukuma Sakhe, which focus and promote sustainable development.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development MEC, Super Zuma, along with his delegation, paid a support visit to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital to see if the Thuthuzela Care Centre is managed effectively by the Department of Health and all stakeholders involved.

This was on March 29 and was done in order to advance the goals of Operation Sukuma Sakhe, which aims to facilitate provision of government services to communities and households as early as possible through collaboration and integration of all interventions of the various government departments.

One of the objectives of the Thuthuzela Care Centres is to eradicate victimisation of women and children, while improving prosecution, particularly in the areas of sexual offences, maintenance, child justice and domestic violence.

After Mandisa Maqutu gave a PowerPoint presentation on how the Thuthuzela Care Centre function, the delegation had a fruitful discussion with the hospital management in the boardroom, where they exchanged ideas on how to further improve the quality of service provided by Thuthuzela Care Centre.

The majority of the inputs focused on approaches in which the nursing personnel of Thuthuzela can be provided with forensic training.

The delegation also discussed strategies on how to reduce rape and other forms of violence particularly in the areas that were found to have the highest rates within the district.

From that point, Maqutu gave them a tour to the centre, where they were able to meet with the staff and patients to evaluate the nature of care being given.

They were pleased to learn that the centre is equipped with all the necessary equipment and is staffed by multi-sectoral employees who are committed to providing the highest level of care to their patients.

The MEC conveyed his appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the hospital management, staff, and the stakeholders involved and guaranteed that as members of the legislature, they will continue to provide support to the hospital.
