Easter weekend rescue at Rocky Bay

There was rough surf and strong rip currents on the day.

NSRI Station 39‘s station commander, Kevin Fourie, reported two local paddlers attempting to beach their paddle ski at Rocky Bay capsized in the surf zone last Saturday at about 11:00.

Both paddlers got into difficulty and were separated from their paddle ski in the rough surf and strong rip currents.

Two lifeguards immediately responded, but were soon at the mercy of the rough surf and rip currents.

“Rescue vessel 39 Alpha was at the time busy conducting training exercises in the area and was summoned to the scene by Station 39 crew,” said Fourie.

“All four casualties (paddlers and lifeguards) were individually picked up and safely brought back to the beach.”
