Vehicle ends up in river, driver crawls to safety

Saps in investigating the incident further.

The driver of a BMW lost control while driving north on the highway in the Port Shepstone area late last night. According to Med-Evac, he crossed the highway and left the road.

On the southbound side, the vehicle hit a bank and became airborne, coming to rest in the river, and subsequently burned out. The driver, injured, managed to get himself to the Umtentweni Toll booth to ask for help.

Med-Evac attended the accident scene, assessed the man and transported him to hospital.

Med-Evac rescue team, together with Saps Search & Rescue, found the burnt out vehicle on its roof in the river and combed the area to ensure there were no passengers.

“The driver was taken by us to hospital early morning, then there was confusion as to whether or not his wife was in the vehicle as she and car were missing, so we went looking. We located the car, did a river search as well, and  searched around the crash site with K9 Search & Rescue but nothing located,” said Glen Preston of Med-Evac.
