Water leak unattended for weeks

The water leak in Marburg has not been resolved after numerous times of reporting it.

For several weeks water has been leaking in Protea Road, Marburg.

Calls to Ugu from many residents to fix the leaking pipe has fallen on deaf ears. Ward 17 councillor Ajith Rajaram has forwarded emails and made calls to Ugu, but the water continues to leak.

A resident on Protea Road said while many areas are without water, the pipe has been leaking for weeks. “I reported it to Ugu and I am sure there are many others. What puzzles me is that many Ugu staff drive along this road and notice this leak and do nothing about it. To be frank, in the past when anyone reported a leak it was fixed within a day. Now, Ugu doesn’t care and I stand by my statement,” said the resident.

An Ugu District Municipality vehicle is parked next to the water leak.

Councillor Rajaram said he was handed a photo of a Ugu vehicle parked where the water was leaking. “The concerned resident noticed the vehicle but did not see anyone get out. Ugu staff sat in a shady area for a few minutes and left. Now this was about a month ago and the water continues to leak. I addressed this on WhatsApp groups were officials serve, and to date nothing has been done. I forwarded details regarding this leak to Customer Care and managers at Ugu and I am still awaiting a response. This is irresponsible of Ugu.”

Ugu District Municipality was contacted for comment on January 31. Photos of the area, the parked Ugu vehicle and a reference number verifying that the leak was reported to them was handed to them.Three weeks later the Herald has not received a comment.
By Tuesday this week the leak had not been repaired.
