Consumers empowered on their rights

Chief Sazi Ndwalane said government needs to help people get back on their feet.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (KZN Edtea) in partnership with the Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality visited the community of Ward 24 in Betania area, to empower them about their rights as consumers.

The delegation was led by mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, Inkosi Sazi Ndwalane, speaker Zodwa Mzindle and senior government officials.
This initiative to educate was not only confined to consumer awareness, KZN Edtea brought on board various programmes it offers, ranging from environmental management awareness to opportunities available to young entrepreneurs.

Delivering his keynote address Mqadi thanked the department for bringing this initiative to the people.

“It is important for people to know what services are available in government, as they are the consumers of these services,” said Mqadi.
Inkosi Sazi Ndwalane asked the government to bring back the old pension system in rural areas where pensioners collected cash.

He said this system made good business sense for local people as they were able to sell their goods every pension day.

“We want that system back so that our community can make money by selling at the pension pay out points and drive our economy. At the superstores where pensions are now collected, before a pensioner gets their money, they must spend a certain amount in the store.”

The chief said that they need to try by all means to help people to sustain themselves.
The day was concluded with a handover of school shoes to needy beneficiaries in the area.

Donating school shoes to Zwelihle Primary School learners are Nokukhanya MaMkhize Ngubane, RNM mayor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi and Ntombenhle Nguza (educator).
