Hindus prepare for Kavady festival

South Coast temples are getting ready to observe the festival of Kavady.

Thai Poosam Kavady is a Hindu religious festival dedicated to the Hindu deity, Lord Muruga.
The carrying of kavady symbolises the carrying of one’s burden and then resting it at the feet of the Lord. This religious occasion falls on the full moon day in the Tamil month Thai (January). The festival starts on Thursday, January 26 and Kavady will be observed on Saturday, February 4.
The 10-day festival starts with the hoisting of a flag. Daily rituals and the singing of devotional hymns are held in honour of Lord Muruga.

Port Shepstone Hindu Temple
Thai Poosam Kavady will start with a flag hoisting on Thursday, January 26 at 18:30. A daily prayer will be held at 18:30. The temple chariot will visit the community on Saturday, January 28. Umbango Temple
The Umbango Sri Siva Soobramoniar Alayam (Umbango Temple) invites all to its annual Thai Poosam Kavady festival from January 26 until February 4. Flag hoisting will commence on Thursday, January 26 with hawan at 17:00 and daily obayams will start at 17:30. The temple chariot will proceed throughout the districts of
Port Shepstone on Sunday, January 29 from 09:00. All kavady bookings will be open to devotees from flag hoisting day. Thai Poosam Kavady is on Saturday, February 4 with hawan starting at 06:00 All devotees who wish to participate in the daily obayams should contact one of the executive members of the temple.
