Harding police recover stolen vehicle, gun and packets of chips
Police expect to make arrests shortly.
A truck driver carrying chips was on his way to make a delivery when he was forced off the road by occupants driving a white Toyota Tazz who fired shots at him.
The incident took place on January 11.
Police spokesperson Captain Petros Mpinge said they tied him up and offloaded the cargo and fled, taking his cellphone as well.
Harding police were quick to respond after the vehicle was spotted at Kwa Mbotho.
Cpt Mpinge said the hijackers abandoned the vehicle on seeing the police and fled into thick bushes.
A pistol with one magazine, but no rounds was found in the vehicle.
Preliminary investigations revealed the Toyota Tazz had been stolen in Harding in August 2022, and the gun stolen in Grootvlei, Mpumalanga in 2007
The stolen chips was recovered at a local residence and police expect to make arrests shortly.
Acting Ugu District Commissioner, Brigadier Bongani Sibiya is pleased with the quick response of the members involved as well as the recoveries made, especially the firearm since these are often used to perpetrate violent crime.
He further encouraged members of the public not to harbour criminals in their communities, but to continue to report them to police.
